Ever so often, I post on Facebook a few things that I believe contributes to what makes you an authentic Jamaican.
Only a few days ago, I posted again. This time I compiled a whole list based on a combination from friends. Here goes… Feel free to add.
Try as many as you can, with friends…
- Climb Blue Mountain (all the way to the top)
- Attend Boys and Girls CHAMPS at least once
- Attend Grand Gala/Mello Go Roun’
- Watch (live) Reggae Girlz, Reggae Boyz or Sunshine Girls play
- Stop at Lymin in Walkerswood, St Ann
- Shop at Linstead Market
- Go to the Pelican Bar (off Treasure Beach)
- Buy Roast Yellow Yam and Saltfish in Williamsfield
- Have a cold Red Stripe
- Pay a visit to Coronation Market on a Saturday morning before 6:00
- Learn to drive a stick-shift
- Climb Dunn’s River Falls
- Visit UWI Chapel, Holy Trinity Cathedral
- Have fish at Hellshire
- Watch horse racing at Caymanas Park
- See Beenie Man perform live
- Stay at a local resort/villa
- Rafting on the Rio Grande/Martha Brae
- Hike up to NewCastle
- A visit to the Doctor’s Cave Beach
- Take pictures at Glistening Waters
- Visit Castleton Gardens
- Tour the Black River Safari Tour
- A walk at the Palisadoes strip for Sunset
- Experience anything in Negril – sunset at Rick’s Cafe, walked on the 7-miles beach stretch
- A tour of the National Gallery/Institute of Jamaica
- Visit the Art Walk Downtown
- Tour the Bob Marley Museum/Devon House
- Watch a local play at the Little Theatre/Little Little Theatre
- Watch a film at Carib
- Drive through the Buff Bay Valley from Irish Town
- Watch Cricket at Sabina Park
- Skinny dip in any river with friends
- Ride a bicycle
- Skull School (I won’t tell your parents)
- Attend an Agricultural Show at Denbigh
- Attend a political rally
- Mineral Baths
- Fishing at any location in Old Harbour
- Attend a dance in Rae Town or a town square across the island
- Sit on the road side in Greenwich Town and have a fish & beer
- Sing in the Tuff Gong Studios (it’s reasonable to book studio time)
- Attend a nine-night
- Attend a Kumina fest
- Attend an NDTC/L’acadco performance
- Eat peppered shrimps at Middle Quarters
- Have Tin Mackerel (Duty Gyal) with rice/ground provisions
- Have jerked pork at Boston (Portland)/Jerked Chicken on the roadside
- Attend Reggae Sunsplash/Sting/Reggae Sumfest/Rebel Salute
- Take a ride on the Knutsford Express
- Take a route taxi
- Stand in line at the US Embassy
- Play dominoes at a bar
- Visited a Reader Man/Woman – IYKYK
- Drink coconut water in Holland Bamboo
- Visit YS Falls/Reich Falls
- Take a picture with any of our music/sports stars
- Buy a hot bread at a shop and eat with butter
- Waved goodbye to your friend/family from the Airport (Palisadoes)
- Gone on a Primary School trip on a “country” bus
