Volunteers ready for Kingston City Marathon

Kingston, Jamaica – Over 400 volunteers will be a part of the 7th Kingston City Run and the first Kingston City Marathon this Sunday, March 17. 

The volunteers hail mainly from Colleges and Universities in the Corporate area along with a diverse group of residents from across the country. The volunteers will be placed in areas to deal with: 

  • Marshalling water stops along the routes 
  • Water Stops coverage 
  • Record Keeping (to balance the electronic scoring) 
  • Photography 
  • Medal distribution 
  • Start and Close of races
  • Post-event activity in Emancipation Park

Governance in Sport

The credibility of sporting organizations has come into question a lot in the last decade with the rise in scandals. This has caused, what some believe, a decrease in public’s trust and by extension the process of democracy.

In the meantime, sport continues to strengthen its role as a major influential institution and its process is also one which is used across corporate and a range of other organizations.

According to Hums and McLean, sport governance refers to the exercise of power with consideration given to influence, authority and the nature of decision making.

In the Caribbean we have heard cries for better governance, but we ask what this really means. Sport Australia summarizes its focus on governance to look at adopting a culture that focuses on accountability. In a lot of other jurisdictions, accountability and processes that are used to impact on policy form the general argument about what good governance should really be.

In the UK, a new code for sport was developed in April 2017 which sets out the levels of transparency, accountability and financial integrity that is required for funding from the national lottery.

While the commercialization of sport has seen incredible growth in the last decade with increased revenues and revenue streams – one of the causes of governance failures must be the slow way, especially in this region (Caribbean) that, sport, which remains a voluntary institution, still have inadequate resources to govern the modern, commercial world of sport of today.

Those reasons may not hold much today, even with those facts as there are some sporting bodies that have governed well. There are four key areas that should be placed as priority to ensure each sporting body meets its mandate for accountability.

These key areas are:

  • Checks and balances – this is a system which prevents concentration of power in any one place. The concept of separation of power looks at a system which accounts for decision making being done based on roles. This process can counter any outside influences.
  • Democracy is also key – this has to do with the public good and how it stacks up against autonomy. The structure of the democratic process must reflect the accountability required. We are looking key success factors such as a legal system, compliance and even a sanctioning process. Stakeholder participation is also key to a democracy along with the way people are elected to govern
  • Perception – how people feel. A sporting body must be transparent, and its communication model must show that. All factual matters of the organization must and show find its way to the public in a timely and consistent way.
  • Diversity in offerings – sport must meet the need to be socially, environmentally and ethically aware and while meeting all the other needs of operations must find a way to meet these other needs. As sport continues to establish itself and make an impact on the wider society, there is need to refresh its goals and objectives for a comprehensive role while achieving financial success

Steps must and should be taken to hold sporting bodies accountable. Stakeholders should therefore be mindful of the people they elect to serve; while focusing on what the outcomes should be.

Governance is a process and while it is our sport leaders where the buck stops, the process starts with us, electing people who are capable, able and willing to lead and manage sport in a way we can all benefit on and off the field of play.

Some progressive news on governance – The IAAF will elect its first female vice-president this year as it continues its efforts to ensure that women are represented at the highest levels of the sport. As part of the widespread reforms adopted by the IAAF Congress at the end of 2016, the IAAF has added minimum gender targets into its constitution to establish parity at all levels in the sport’s governance. This is a welcome addition to the Business of Sport.

WELCOME PARTY FOR USAIN BOLT TRACKS AND RECORDS

KINGSTON, Jamaica – One of Kingston’s best eateries, Usain Bolt Tracks and Records will host the Welcome Party for the 7th running of the Kingston City Run.

The world-renowned facility, which has three other locations (Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and London) will feature as a targeted sponsor for the event which will host the first marathon in Kingston.

The “run” will be held under the theme Run Di City, Feel Di Vibe and a collaboration with Tracks and Records “Real Jamaican Vibes” is a match made for Kingston and “it promises to be a thriller to get the weekend’s event started,” says Angiel Shaw, head of marketing, Tracks and Records.

The welcome party is scheduled for Friday, March 15 and will feature one of Jamaica’s top entertainment DJ groups, Coppershot Disco. The 25-year-old group has been featured in several shows in Jamaica, Caribbean and in the USA.

The group is known for their style which consists of distinguished remixes, entertaining dubs, unique mixing, scratching and original jams of roots reggae, pop, soca, dancehall, hip hop, reggaeton and R&B.

The welcome party will be for registered participants in the Kingston City Run who will enjoy specials from the delectable menu.

The party will run from 7 – 9 pm.

RunLive partners with Kingston City Marathon

MIAMI, Florida: – Miami-based RunLive, one of the world’s first gamified social running platforms, has agreed to sign on as a partner for the Kingston City Marathon. Race Day is Sunday, March 17 in Kingston.

Founded by Mike Thompson and David Mullings, Jamaican entrepreneurs based in Florida, RunLive recently graduated from the leAD Sports Accelerator in Berlin, Germany.

“We originally planned to launch in Berlin first but could not pass up the opportunity to be part of Kingston’s first marathon” said Mike Thompson, a former Development Operations Engineer, who came up with the idea for the app 2 years ago.

David Mullings has been named as an Ambassador for the Kingston City Marathon and the RunLive team will help to drive visibility for the event via promotion in the app, posts on social media and bringing at least one Instagram running influencer to participate and share her experience with her followers. RunLive has over 135,000 followers on Instagram.

While plenty of other running apps with a social component do exist, most of them focus on mapping your run and tracking statistics but do not offer a way for runners to connect and compete in real-time.

“I was introduced to Mike by a Florida angel investor group to help him scale and was really impressed with his product. I committed to help raise capital and invest but got sucked in by his drive and the product roadmap” said co-founder David Mullings who is also a mentor with the Branson Center of Entrepreneurship Caribbean and Founder Institute Jamaica.

Kingston City Marathon will enhance Kingston as a sport tourism destination

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Kingston’s hosting of its first IAAF/AIMS certified marathon on Sunday, March 17 is just another product that can serve as a great addition to its sport tourism product.

The marathon which is deemed appropriate in the wellness segment of the overall sport tourism product. Donovan White, Director of Tourism highlighted some of the global trends in his keynote address at the media launch of the Kingston City Marathon on Wednesday (January 16).

The Director made some key points:

  • There were 830 million wellness trips in 2017, this was equivalent to 17 per cent of all tourism revenues
  • Wellness tourism is set to grow 7.5 per cent through to 2022
  • The estimated earnings from wellness travel is estimated to reach $919 billion by 2022
  • There is an average spend of $1,528 per trip for a wellness tourist, this represents 53 per cent more than the average tourist

“Jamaica now hosts two marathons almost four months apart, this is a clear opportunity,” according to the Director.

The Director was quick to point out the already established products of Kingston – great music, food and other exciting sporting events will be enhanced by the Kingston City Marathon, which he suggested that “marathons are a huge draw for sport tourists and have the potential to generate millions of dollars for the host city of Kingston.”

Co-Chair, Nicola Madden-Greig, in highlighting the announcements for this year’s running explained the partnership with the Miami Marathon where winners from both events will be entered in each other’s events free of charge. “Jamaica will exhibit and participate at this year’s Miami Marathon as part of our global outreach to encourage patrons to enter the Jamaican event in Kingston.”

Emceeing is a real job

An emcee is a host or facilitator of an event. So whether it is a conference, seminar, workshop, stage show or even a political conference, the role of an emcee is to ensure the audience is engaged and made to understand what the event is all about.

What does that mean? The emcee sets the tone, warms up the audience and ensure one items flows smoothly from one to the other.

That therefore means, the emcee has to be prepared. Research, background information and even access to the stage and venue are key things to ensure an emcee’s job happens without any major issue.

As the event organizer, you MUST provide the emcee with the following:

  • History of the event
  • List of presenters with bio-data
  • List of performers with bio-data
  • Guests and status for salutations
  • Date for a visit to the venue before the event

This job of an emcee is one that is a paid gig. Make no mistakes.

The emcee has to prepare and be appropriately dressed for the occasion. The emcee also has to have reliable transportation. There are some rules that apply:

  • Evening/Night events must include accommodation
  • Day events should attract parking close to the venue’s stage, room
  • A liaison should be assigned to the host to ensure back up (this may vary from a running order printed, with corrections, bottled water at room temperature
  • Ensure there is proper seating close to the stage or at an appropriate place backstage
  • If a wardrobe change is needed, ensure there is sufficient access with facilities

Finally, arrange for a sound check an hour before the event.

An emcee, can opt to have a deposit of up to 50 per cent before event and final payment must be made on the day of the event.

BRING BACK JAMAICA SPORT

ON A COUCH SOMEWHERE – Back in 2012 there was a group called Sport Tourism Implementation Committee (STIC) and in 2014, there was Jamaica Sport. What was important, even with the name change, the group was assembled to provide the framework to sustainably develop sports tourism as well as leverage local and international sports events to increase visitor arrivals to the island.

National StadiumThe group was chaired by Chris Dehring with a mix of public and private sector sport officials to include skill sets of content development, planning, marketing, operations, venue development, legal to name a few. The combined years of experience could be compared to any other global sporting body and could possibly outscore given the resources, which were available at the time.

During the tenure, we worked closer with the Jamaica Tourist Board, the agency with responsibility to market Jamaica’s Brand and made considerable leap into hosting events which at the time satisfied steadily, the mandate set:

  • Growing sport in communities
  • Employing and/or using sport officials to manage events
  • Attracting tourists to Jamaica (heads to beds)
  • Considerable media attention
  • Strengthening and deepening Jamaica’s position in the Sport Tourism market

The point here is, there was tremendous potential. It was also indicated that Sport Tourists have considerable higher spend per day and will return for a vacation after. Those trends have been reported globally, so we were on to something.

Jamaica’s rich sporting history was not to be put aside, as with the consistent excellent performances at international competitions (Summer and Winter Olympics, World Championships, Major League Soccer,) there was a steady build up of the curious and discerning tourist. What was also trending, if only for a specific time, was film crews from all over who would visit to film documentaries, photo shoots, commercials and to attend CHAMPS.

The Jamaica Tourist Board has the records of the events. While the major sporting disciplines were part of the mix, the team offered some insight on what happens when targeted and network sport like Karate, Beach Volleyball, Surfing and Badminton were supported. See excerpt of a report below:

Since November 2014, an investment of US$258,000 was made toward sporting events including: CONCACAF, Netball, Badminton, Track & Field (JIIM), ITF Tennis, Beach Volley, Cricket (CPL & WI v. AUS), Masters Football, Surfing, Golf, Endurance Running, Regional Swimming, and UANA Water Polo Championships.  This generated over 20,000 room nights (4,000 heads to beds) with an overall economic impact of approximately US$6M.

Fast forward to 2016 when Jamaica Sport was dissolved (without warning), we are still struggling to find a strong hold on how to market Jamaica as sport tourist destination.

As Dalton Myers suggested in this column, “maybe we not really ready” (I paraphrased); maybe we need to stop pretending that there is interest. ARTISTES ARE REQUIRED TO IMPROVE THEIR PERFORMANCES ALL THE TIME

This article wishes to compile a list of ideas for artistes who ply their business on stage for a living. Live shows are always a thing. Fans will travel just about anywhere in the world to see their favorite artistes perform. What that means is, they always expect the best. Mic with Lights

An artiste therefore needs to understand that to give the best, they must invest their time to “get their act together.”

It starts sitting with the management team, having accepted a show and the following must be done:

  1. Have an attorney look over the contract
  2. Ensure there is mutual agreement
  3. Number of persons to tour as part of the artiste’s party
  4. Submit list ahead of time to promoter
  5. Confirm air travel with classifications
  6. Confirm hotel with classifications
  7. Confirm ground transportation
  8. From airport
  9. From hotel to sound check
  10. From hotel to performance
  11. From hotel to airport for departure
  12. From hotel to a community service stop (if agreed)
  13. Decide on wardrobe
  14. Decide on media – to include exclusive where appropriate
  15. REHEARSE the set based on the market/audience to face
  16. Do the sound check
  17. Determine length of set without encore (this would have been in agreement)
  18. While on stage, ensure there is a stand for: Water; somewhere to hang clothes if the artiste decides to take off clothing; Have a back-up microphone where necessary

There are lots of other little things the Road Manager would have been able to determine based on research and would have discussed with the team. If there is a band involved ensure all band members are able to travel to the location, especially when going overseas. Ensure all visas are acquired before travel.  Stage

Performance must always be top-class

Artistes and athletes have the same type of jobs, they must “show up” on the day. There is no excuse for them. They must be ready once they are listed to perform. Live Shows must be about an experience. Ensure you are ready to deliver on that experience. The artiste must liken himself/herself to a sport star who is expected to win a race, score a goal, or score 40 points a game, or a touchdown. Patrons deserve better. Stage 1

Artistes should invest in knowing what their audiences want and deliver when required. Live Shows are the pathway to a fan outside of when they buy your music to hear you via a recording. Real artistes add more to their recordings and leaves a fan wanting more.

Artistes should NEVER short-change their live performance set by thinking they can perform without 1. sound check 2. rehearsal 3. research into what the audience history is – Your portfolio should be diverse enough to make the adjustments necessary.

Jamaican Entrepreneurs Among Start-ups Chosen For leAD Sports Accelerator

Miami-based Startup Selected for German Sports Accelerator

ORLANDO, Florida: – Miami-based RunLive, Inc. is one of ten startups chosen from over 400 applicants to participate in the 2018 cohort of the leAD Sports Accelerator in Berlin, GermanyleAD-Class-of-2018.

RunLive recently launched a public beta of its running app in the iOS store that differentiates itself by being one of the world’s first gamified social running platforms. Runners across the world can connect and match instantly to compete in real-time, while being rewarded for their triumphs and the miles they cover. The app offers instant motivation and around-the-clock competition powered by patent-pending algorithms, in-run voice chat and audio-guided feedback.

The duo participated in a round of interviews and then were invited to Berlin to pitch and conduct interviews on Monday, July 16. Now they will accept an investment for 8% of the company with a post-money valuation of €1.25 million and participate in a 12-week program in Berlin that ends with presentations to 16 investors and leAD’s internal fund. RunLive currently has over 1500 users in the public beta and is focused on the user experience before trying to scale bigger. The team was in the middle of fundraising for their seed round and are excited to showcase diversity in tech.

Track and Field – fan change or not?

Between 2002 and 2017, Jamaica’s track and field was on top of the world. The athletes consistently won medals at every major international meet and built and secured a reputation as “world beaters” in the 100, 200, 100 meters hurdles, 400 meters hurdles, 110 meters hurdles, to name a few and later in that 15-year span, field events made their own mark.

In the absence of football being able to consistently perform at the top, Jamaica’s sport reputation and image was largely carried by track and field. Kudos to the other sporting disciplines which were able to send signals that they were also in the game.

Administratively on the international scene, Jamaicans were either appointed or kept their positions in senior and strategic roles in the IOC, Netball, Football, Volleyball, Badminton and Track and Field. Those roles are key in ensuring that Jamaica, as a developing nation, continue to receive capacity building on and off the field of play, while sitting at the table to influence or participate in decision-making at the global level.

The point of this article though is to impress on the JAAA, with just over a year to go for the World Championships in Qatar (September 28 – October 6) and the JOA, with the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo; put in place a comprehensive marketing and promotions plan which will serve to, most importantly, win new fans to the sport.cropped-sportsmarketing1.jpg

Outside of the die-hards that show up at a meet no matter what, the sport fan is becoming harder to please and what that means is some research and subsequent implementation of a plan could be what turns the support for our track and field athletes in the short to medium terms.

You may ask why research? The simple answer is the governing body would know
• Who is consuming the sport
• What they like about the sport or what they do not like
• What are the things that could change to make the sporting event more favorable to fans?
• Who are the athletes that can help to generate support from fans (more access to the athletes)?

Track and Field is ahead of most sport as internationally, the athletes are winning and that is a plus. That momentum therefore has to be built so by the time we get around to the World Championships, we will all be aware of:

• Who the athletes are
• What events the athletes compete in?
• How we can support their dreams with the support of fans

The individual nature of track and field may pose some challenge, but a meeting with the managers and agents could plant that initial seed and then get the athletes’ buy-in.
