This is an official statement from the Jamaica Table Tennis Association
Jamaica Men’s Table Tennis team lead by Coach Barney Reed and Team Captain Michael Hyatt won its first EVER World Table Tennis Championship in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday May 4th after defeating South Africa 3-2 in one of the most thrilling divisional finals in all of the 2014 World Championships.
The team of Chris Marsh, Michael Hyatt, Kane Watson and Simon Tomlinson ended the World Championships as one on of the ONLY unbeaten teams in the Men’s Team competition, ending with a record of 8 wins and 0 losses. And in typical Jamaican team fashion Michael, Simon and Kane each won a match in the finals to lead Team Jamaica to a historic 1st ever World Championship title. In the final match of the finals Kane Watson defeated his South Africa opponent 3-2 (11-9 in the 5th) to secure the win for Jamaica.
Special thanks to team Assistant Coach and Mascot Tai Hyatt, President of the JTTA Godfrey Lothian, members of the Jamaican Women’s team and most importantly team sponsor Fujitsu for all coming together to create HISTORY. Already two (2) movie producers have inquired about making the movie “Pong Runnings” which will star the members of the team.
Folks – our team has unfinished business with Fujitsu in Japan this week and we look forward to this. But tonight the team will hit the streets of Tokyo to celebrate with our friends from the USA, Brazil and other countries. We worked hard to get here and tonight we proud to be JamaicanTable Tennis player, proud to be Jamaican and finally a World Champion. The Sports Development Foundation, JOA The ministry of Sports and the Jamaican Media Houses have all been a part of this wonderful achievement.
